Tim Cook just took the stage at WWDC and shared a few updates on the health and growth of the app store:

- 400M app store accounts with stored credit cards, making it the largest collection of accounts + credit cards on the web

- 650K apps in the store, 250K optimized or made specifically for the iPad

- 30 billion cumulative app downloads from the store

- a total of $5 billion paid to developers

"400M app store accounts with stored credit cards, making it the largest collection of accounts + credit cards on the web" That noise you're hearing is the sound of ten thousand hackers having their interest piqued.

It so gross. Not only is it rather intimidating and obnoxious, it's also rather pathetic.

If Microsoft were to make the same graphic - a fake check made out to the developers who have used their various application development platforms over the years in an amount equivalent to what the developers have made - it would be a check for, I dunno, trillions of dollars.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Apple has the clout to lead the charge on things like hi-res displays (I still miss my badass old CRTs with their miniscule dot pitch), but their smug, bullying posture is often gross.

    I'm surprised it's only 5 billion dollars.

If that's what Apple paid to developers, and Apple gets 30% of App Store purchases, Apple only made roughly 2 billion dollars from the store. It also means the average "selling price" for an app is less than 24 cents. I understand that there are many free apps, but that just means a "selling price" of zero.

That's enough money going out to pay a team of over 20,000k employees $60k a year for the last four years. That's on average since the app store was introduced, I'm sure the amounts paid out this year are much higher than the average.

Software is only worth so much, that's an average of $13 per person out of all of those accounts. I know I've barely spent that much on mobile software, so many programs are available for free. I wonder if that figure includes add revenue?

Ah, yes, the amazing 120 dot pitch CRTs ... good times. St00pid.

120 dots per inch that is (for top of the line 0.21 mm models), just to clarify.

400M apps on the app store is a really amazing thing. Recently there is an app store called Appvn also offering millions of applications for free. http://appvndownload.com
