Acer Iconia W510 and W700 Hands On at IDF
by Anand Lal Shimpi on September 11, 2012 5:38 PM ESTIntel had Acer W510 (Clover Trail/Atom based) and a W700 (Ivy Bridge based) Windows 8 tablets in its private press demo room at IDF. Both devices are featured in the video below. There have been some changes to what we reported on at Computex however, the big one is that the W700 no longer has a Thunderbolt port. This is a seriously disappointing change, but I do believe it was Microsoft influenced.
Both the Atom and Ivy Bridge based systems felt really fast. You can get a feel for yourself in the video below:

Looks like he lost a pretty serious game of bloody knuckles.That's the same mini wireless keyboard i have and i'm glad it seems to work so well for the W700 when it's docked. I wasn't sure if it was going to be too large to bring around with me, but it should work great.
And idea what kind of graphical capabilities these things will have?

The W700 has an Ivy bridge i5 I believe, so ULV HD4000. Look at the 2012 ultrabooks and you'll get an idea.The W510 uses the Z2580, which has the SGX544MP2 @ 533Mhz. That should have similar performance to the iPad (2012).

If you like it then you should have also liked the current (can even call it "old" by now) Brazos-based W500. Or the mostly equivalent MSI 110w, which has the advantage of a neat optical trackpad on the bezel.Unfortunately you are right on your other point though - they already cocked it up. It has no active digitizer and stylus.
And worse, they might have done the same to the W700 too... shame, really.

I read somewhere that we could expect the W510 to be $600 to $800, which I find to be ridiculous. It's a netbook with a IPS touchscreen and a second battery. Doh...MS doesn't support TB natively citing security concerns. And no Anand, although the Apple fan in you might disagree, TB is not a concern; not sure it will ever be.
