Hot on the heels of the launch of the Radeon HD 4800 series, AMD sent out 10 cards into the wild based on its new R700 GPU. Despite the name, the R700 is nothing more than two Radeon HD 4870 GPUs on a single board, but with its new CrossFire X port does AMD's R700 scale better than two individual 4870s? The card doesn't ship until August/September, but the early results look promising.

In stark contrast to NVIDIA's $650 GPU launch earlier this week, AMD is letting us make an early introduction of the Radeon HD 4850 today. Priced at $199, the Radeon HD 4850 is as fast as, if not faster, than a GeForce 9800 GTX. And in an unexpected move, NVIDIA has also dropped the price on the 9800 GTX to $199 in order to compete.
