Overall, AMD is pitching the RX 480 as a card suitable for 1440p gaming as well as 1080p gaming and VR gaming. In the case of 1080p the card is clearly powerful enough, as even Crysis 3 at its highest quality setting is flirting with 60fps. However when it comes to 1440p, the RX 480 feels like it’s coming up a bit short; other than DiRT Rally, performance is a bit low for the 60fps PC gamer. Traditionally cards in the $199-$249 mainstream range have been 1080p gaming cards, and in the long run I think this is where RX 480 will settle at as well.

    :) Marketing hype should be taken with a grain of salt, especially from AMD (Bulldozer, Mantle, Fury overclocking, to name a few). Besides, the announced MSRP was a good indication of things to come. Nothing in life is for free, right ;)? Anyway, the AiB cards with better cooling and an 8-pin power connector would be available soon. With some OC, you could be hitting very close to a 980.

    230mm2 is almost as big as 1070 (75% of 1080)
    But the result is slower than 970.
    Good luck with hyping Zen, AMD.

    it doesn't work that way, card consists of more then just shaders. and the 1070 is twice the price!

    and other reviewers put its aggregate score above a gtx970OC.

    I think you mean a GPU consists more than just shaders? It's true and his comparison isn't exact, but it can't be completely discounted eitger. NVIDIA has a real world performance per die area advantage over AMD. Probably mostly because they have a real world performance to peak theoretical performance advantage over AMD. DX12 seems to reduce the advantage somewhat but even in DX12 NVIDIA's advantage in that area seems significant.

    The 1070 isn't 75% of the 1080 in size, its the exact same as the 1080 in size. It's the exact same base chip with disabled portions.

    When people talk about 'cut down' versions, did you really think they are physically cutting up the chip?
