Looks like people are going to finally need to upgrade their 5 year old iPhone 6’s, even after they got a new battery last year for $29 :P

Woohoo. My good ole Air 2 still good for updates.

Their Planned Obsolescence Master Plan is working overtime. I was hoping the iPhone 6 gets one more year, though I expected the 5S to be retired.

I'm somewhat annoyed Apple hasn't released a true successor for my iPhone SE as it seems likely it will be in the next group to lose support, but no one other than Apple would even think of producing updates for a phone for five years.

Unfortunately the iPhone XR is the new SE.

I'm hoping they release an iPhone XE

Nothing is stopping you from using the iPhone 6 with iOS 12 for another year.

I have an iPhone 6s which I accidentally updated to iOS 12 from iOS 9. I don’t give a damn about iOS 13 or 30. I just want a chance to downgrade it back to iOS 9.

Five years of dedicated operating system feature and security updates of any consumer device is absolutely commendable.

It's weird how Apple's so anti-repair, but willing to go above and beyond for software & security support.
  • Lakados - Monday, June 3, 2019 - link

Apple isn't exactly "anti-repair" They are anti self-repair, there is a difference. Apple is more than happy to fix your phone IF you have the apple care warranty for a semi reasonable price tag. Outside that though and you are in for a rough time.
  • Fergy - Tuesday, June 4, 2019 - link

@Lakados They go out of their way to make repair as difficult as possible. Most of the time Apples repairs replace most of the machine instead of the broken part.
    That makes Apple anti-repair
  • plewis00 - Tuesday, June 4, 2019 - link

There’s nothing semi-reasonable about the cost of AppleCare and it’s only applicable for one additional year anyway. You’re best off just getting a third-party warranty or insurance. Also on another note, they are ‘anti-repair’ or at least make it as hard as possible, what kind of company charges £3000 for a fully integrated laptop with single logic board, keyboard that will break and no modular parts? More importantly what kind of people are naive enough to buy it...
  • Samus - Monday, June 3, 2019 - link

The irony isn't all that shocking. We ARE talking about Apple here. They won't even sell OEM parts to consumers, then essentially void your warranty if you use 3rd party components like a screen or battery when you had no choice but to do so.

As you said though, supporting a device for 5 years is class-leading...most smartphones are lucky to be supported through a 2 year contract, let alone beyond.
  • plewis00 - Monday, June 3, 2019 - link

They won’t void your warranty for third-party parts any more, there was an official announcement about it a while back - so if you have a third-party replaced display you can still have the battery replaced under their repair program.

That's good, given that such a policy is actually illegal in the US, and has been since 1975.
(Spoilers: It doesn't stop anyone from instituting said policies, because enforcement is exceptionally lax.)

Apple still has ads about the "incredible" iPhone 6 in India and sell it for close to $400(!) even now. Hopefully this means that they finally stop selling it and milking their customers.
  • zepi - Tuesday, June 4, 2019 - link

Serves right those Indians who keep voting for their protectionistic government.

This is the kind of example that economics 101 book would mention about import restrictions and their harmfulness to the people.
  • JarvisIN - Thursday, June 6, 2019 - link

I think you need to go back to school and study economics again to understand difference between developed and developing nations and need to protect domestic manufacturers. OTOH, orange president is not doing anything different when it comes to trade war with China.

I recall that they still sold iPhone 4s in India when the iPhone 6 was out.
  • UtilityMax - Wednesday, June 5, 2019 - link

Looks like they dropped all devices with less than 2GB of RAM. Fortunately, all of my iPads are still supported.

iOS updates are a gimmick, you can stay on the same OS and just add app updates for new hardware. Windows does it all the time and so does Linux. What if you got a message from Windows telling you that you had to buy a new computer in order to use the update. Apple is just a greedy company trying to make quotas off of our dollars.

New to all off this. I have the 5s. I was told the phone will stop working because it will be too old to keep up and carriers will drop it. How long before that happens? That is, if what’s they said was true.
