Augmented reality is really awesome stuff. It has lots of better uses than VR in a work environment or even life. Hope it matures to something awesome.

On a side note, using it on a phone really can freak people out you waving phone around..i was doing it at work and some women went to HR thinking i was taking pictures of her in break room. lol

I think that probably has to do with being known as a headcase. Taking pictures at work for a company website wouldn't be unusual.

Did they even try to talk to you before running to HR like it's their mommy?

I just hope it cannot be used to overlay naked schematics of colleagues. Especially my colleagues.

Looking forward to see a good application for this. Side note, if the pic is provided by Microsoft, they could have provided a bit more cheerful one. He doesn't seem too happy with it. 😅

He has seen too much. Or too little based on that diagonal FOV.

It isn't our responsibility to ensure someone that scruffy is happy. If he wants to feel better about himself he can mow that gross man goat hipster thing on his face. Guys with beards are such a huge turn off anyhow. It says a lot about a person's self-esteem, how much they care for themselves, and the sorts of hobbies and interests they have that are incompatible with any sort of meaningful life -- beyond being just physically revolting anyway.
  • Teckk - Tuesday, November 12, 2019 - link

Whoa .. That was not supposed to be very serious, anyway, if you're concluding all guys with beards have low self-esteem, no meaningful life etc. then that's ridiculous.
  • PeachNCream - Tuesday, November 12, 2019 - link

Not ALL of them are that way. I can think of one or two that defy the norm, I guess. It still doesn't fix the whole dead-animal-on-my-face look though.

    lol. Imagine being this stupid.
  • Santoval - Wednesday, November 13, 2019 - link

I would suggest that overgeneralizing and branding people as X or Y based solely on their looks and/or their *momentary* facial expression is even less meaningful and healthy.

I wonder? How much different is this from the head-up displays used by the military-industrial complex for decades to subdue the global population? Will the user be able to look at a person and have a smart-laser mounted in the ceiling kill 'em? How much of AI-ish thingees have been used to make life better for the average human, rather than figuring out how to extract more money or compliance from them?? Anyone?

I rest my case. I hope.

People aren't free in spite of the military, they are free because of it.

There is always some despot that doesn't care about your life or your desires and will take you and everything you own. The free world is obligated to defend itself from such.

"There is always some despot that doesn't care about your life or your desires and will take you and everything you own. "

you know that you're describing out Manchurian President? everything for Putin (and Xi and Ergogan and ...). if the Free Press doesn't parrot his propaganda, they're 'the enemy of the people'. we will defend ourselves against the Manchurian President. HoloLens or not.

I wonder? Could the Illuminati be the ones actually using these? And the military-industrial complex are just scapegoats? And that all advances in technology are just to turn us into LITERAL sheeple? Cross-breeds between humans and sheep? ANYONE?!
  • GreenReaper - Monday, November 11, 2019 - link

Not that there'd be anything wrong with that. <^_^>
  • nandnandnand - Monday, November 11, 2019 - link

Horizontal FOV should be at least 200 degrees, vertical should be 150+ degrees. Not even worth it as a freebie.
  • jordanclock - Monday, November 11, 2019 - link

I'm very curious to hear what use cases you would have for a HoloLens and how they match up to what the product is intended for.

Such a FoV would be *nice*, but it's not necessary for AR. In VR, FoV is needed for immersion (and peripheral vision helps in games).

In AR, you're already immersed in the real world. So, FoV is mainly about where you can put useful graphics overlays. Resolution of those graphics is probably more important, since current AR use cases are more likely to involve text and detailed technical schematics.

Finally, keep in mind that this is mobile. You cannot expect it to have the resolution + FoV of a high-end PC setup. You can wish all you like, but you won't get it.
