In Austin with Three Macs

On Sunday I hop on a plane to travel to my very first CeBIT in Hannover, Germany. I've never been to CeBIT and come this April I will have been running AnandTech for a full 11 years. I figured it was a bit ridiculous that I'd never been to one of the largest hardware tradeshows in the world, so this year is the first for me. Despite my better judgement and everyone telling me that CeBIT is absolutely horrid to attend, that's where I'll be going on Sunday.

I tend to like making things more difficult for myself so I managed a trip out to Austin to meet with AMD and Intel right before CeBIT.  I left for Austin yesterday, I'll be spending today with AMD and tomorrow with Intel, heading home for a day and then it's off to Germany. Why tell this tale of my travels? Apple also announced its updated MacBook and MacBook Pros on Tuesday, the day before I left for Austin. Apple doesn't send us pre-release hardware, so when an announcement like this happens I hop in the Techmobile and drive down to the Apple store to buy whatever Steve announces for review. In this case it was a couple of notebooks.

I've got other work to do on the day I'm back home before CeBIT and there was no way for me to get all of the MacBook and MacBook Pro testing done in a day before I left for Austin, so I had to travel with them. I also needed a notebook to write on while the MacBook and Pro ran their battery tests in my hotel room, so I snagged the Air as well. The end result? Three notebooks, 13.4 lbs and strange looks at me in the security line at RDU. Unfortunately this isn't the first time I've traveled with multiple notebooks, so I know the pain all too well.

The whole point of this post isn't to talk about how I've got a stack of Mac notebooks in my hotel room, but rather give you all an update on when you can expect the review. The writing is around 80% complete and the testing is at 100%. So unless AMD offs me for something I said about Phenom, you can expect the AnandTech Review of both the new MacBook and MacBook Pro tomorrow morning.

that I think it's great you review (and use) Macs. It's refreshing to find someone who's not firmly on one side or the other.

Keep up the great work Anand, and if you find ceBit a disappointment, send me to Germany next year ;)

LOL... reminds me of CES. I brought three as well: one to carry around (ASUS U1E), one to do my work and finish testing (WidowPC 517D2), and an Eee PC 4G just for good measure. Pain in the butt, for sure!
